BAIDOA( Halbeeg News)- At least four government soldiers are reported killed and more than six others wounded after heavily armed Al-shabab fighters waged dawn attack on a military base in Deynunay locality in Bay region on Saturday.
Col. Abdirahman Noor, a soldier among 60th battalion of Somali National Army told the local media that al-shabab seized the control of the base after the government forces were overpowered in a brief gunfight that occurred in the area but withdrew after an hour.
On the other hand, a number of government soldiers sustained injuries after a military vehicle ferrying reinforcement forces to Deynunay was targeted with landmine explosion near the town.
The wounded soldiers were rushed to Baidoa general hospital where they are being treated.
The situation in Deynunay in now back to normal as government forces took over the control of the base.
This attack comes days 100 Somali National Army (SNA) officers on Thursday concluded training course in Baidoa town of the Southwest state.
Addressing the trained officers, the Force Commander of the 60th battalion of SNA, Ismail Mukhtar commended them for their zeal during the training.
Ismail stated that the forces will soon launch security operations aimed to liberate the areas under the control of al-shabab fighters in South West state.
The trained officers graduated after successfully completing a three-month military course, conducted by UK training commanders.
May this year, six people were killed and several others wounded after Al-shabab fighters carried out an ambush attack against army vehicles transporting supply to government military base in Deynunay along the main road linking Mogadishu and Baidoa.
The attack has prompted heavy gunfight that lasted for hours between the sides.
