Al-Shabaab commander was killed in Lower Jubba region after allied forces launched operations to hunt down Al-Shabaab fighters in the region, Military official confirmed Friday.
Somali government troops in cooperation with forces from US military and continental troops have intensified the fight against Al-Shabaab in the south and central Somalia.
Speaking to the media, the commander of the 11th platoon of SNA’s 58th battalion, Abdi Yare confirmed the death of Al-Shabaab ringleader who famous in Lower region.
According to Yare, the joint forces raided Al-Shabaab controlled villages in the region.
He said the forces engaged in gun battle with Al-Shabaab fighters in Arare village.
“The allied forces eliminated an Al-Shabaab high-rank commander in an operation jointly conducted by Somali National Army and U.S. forces,” said Yare.
Somali Military identified the slain Al-Shabaab commander as Aruuriyow who was in charge of Zakawat (levy) collection in Lower Jubba region.
The attack comes barely two days after Jubbaland authorities and AMISOM officials jointly agreed to rump up operations against Al-Shabaab in Jubbaland regions.
Al-Shabaab which wants to overthrow Somali government has been fighting SNA and AMISOM forces since 2007 when AU deployed its troops in Somalia.
Despite losing many major towns to Somali government forces, the group controlled a large swath of remote areas.
Al-Shabaab carries out hit and run attacks on military bases in South and central Somalia.
