Senior Al-Shabab commander has been killed in an operation conducted by Somali forces backed AMISOM troops in Hiran region.
Somali military officials told Sonna that Al-Shabab commander in charge of Zakawat (levy) collections in Hiiraan region was on Saturday killed in a gun battle with allied forces.
The leader who was identified as Ali Ahmed Gure was heading the group’s fighters in Hees village which lies 35km away from Beledweyne towns.
Reports say the allied forces and heavily armed Al-shabaab fighters engaged in hours of fierce fighting in several areas including Hees, Bar-dere villages.
The governor of Hiiraan region, Ali Jeyte Osman and a number of other government officials are leading the operations to reopen and secure the roads blocked by Al-shabab.
According to Hiraan administration, the offensives are expected to break the siege imposed on Bula-burde town by Al-Shabab fighters three years ago.
Bula-burde town which is located 240 km North of Somali capital was seized by Somali forces in 2014 after six years rule of Al-shabab.
Somali forces and AMISOM troops have stepped up offensives against Al-shabab fighters in Hiiraan, Lower and Middle Shabelle regions
