Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – An al-Shabaab operative has surrendered to Somali authorities in southwest Somalia at a time the government plans to launch the second phase of the operations against al-Shabaab.
The defector who was identified as Dhurre Yusuf Garow also known as Hilal has turned in himself to the Somali National Army’s 60 unit in the Bay region.
Dhurre who was responsible for guerrilla operations for al-Shabaab said he decided to surrender following a dispute with the members of the group.
He called on other Al-Shabaab members to desert the group and surrender to the government.
The surrender of Dhurre amid the government plans to announce new operations against the group and liberate the remaining areas under al-Shabaab control.
Last year, the Somali government launched operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central Somalia regions.
Following months-long operations, the Somali government liberated dozens of villages and towns in the Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle, Mudug, and Galgudud regions.
This week, Somali Information Ministry claimed that the government forces killed at least 3,000 al-Shabaab fighters and wounded about 3700 others.
