MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – An al-Shabaab fighter has defected to government forces in central Somalia amid the government intensified operations against the group in southcentral regions.
According to the state-owned media, Ibrahim Moalim Mideye, a member of al-Shabaab on Monday surrendered to Security Forces in the Qalanqal area near Bahdo town of Somalia’s Galmudug State.
The surrender of the operative comes as the government claimed to have killed hundreds of al-Shabaab fighters in operations in south-central Somalia.
The government forces also liberated dozens of towns and villages in the Hiiraan, Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions.
Despite the loss of a large swath of territories, al-Shabaab is still capable of carrying out attacks against government institutions, military bases, and hotels in major towns.
The group is also controlling dozens of towns and villages in southern Somalia regions.
