Mogadishu (JOWHAR) – At least three traditional elders were killed after heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed a recently recaptured small town in central Somalia.
According to witnesses in Masaway town, al-Shabaab fighters targeted the elders in the town, leaving them dead and leaving behind dozens of injuries.
General Ahmed Mohamed Teredisho, the Somali National Army (SNA) Commander for Sector 27 in the region, spoke to the media and condemned the attack, vowing that the government will take revenge against al-Shabaab.
“The Khawarij fighters who avoid engaging in a direct fight against Somali military have attacked civilians. However, the community defence forces have foiled the attack and killed more than 18 al-Shabaab fighters,” said Teredisho.
The attack comes less than a month after the Somali government announced the commencement of the second phase of the operations to liberate areas under al-Shabaab control in the south and central Somalia.
The Somali government has been fighting al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group for more than a decade.
The government forces succeeded to liberated dozens of major towns including the capital, Mogadishu.
