MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Armed al-Shabaab fighters have attacked a village in Mandera county near Kenya-Somalia border.
According to locals, the fighters bombed a telecommunications mast in Darkale village outside Banisa town.
“We are in distress and we don’t know who will save us. The militants are here creating havoc and fear. They bombed the Safaricom mast at night and that has weakened the communication network,” said Hassan Ahmed.
Al-Shabab militants usually destroy telecommunication masts to disrupt police response and communication in the area before they could inflict harm on the locals.
The militants have been targeting communication masts, schools and residential houses rented by communities that are not native to the volatile northeastern Kenyan counties of Garissa, Mandera and Wajir.
The area is near the Somalia border and the militants usually cross at will and stage attacks before escaping back.
