MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters have this morning stormed a military base in Somalia’s central region, prompting fierce fighting with Somali forces.
According to sources in Amara town, the attack in the early hours of Tuesday, around 4 a.m. local time, targeted military base in the town in Mudug region.
The assault began with the militants attempting to drive a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) onto the base.
Military sources claim the VBIED was destroyed on approach, which was followed up with an infantry assault.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying its forces captured base.
In a statement posted its affiliate media, the group claimed seizing 14 military vehicles including twelve technical vehicles.
Somali government has not officially commented on the attack on its forces in Mudug region.
