(Halbeeg News) -The minister of ports and sea transport of the federal republic of Somalia together with other senior government officials have attended an event held at Mogadishu port to launch new equipment on Saturday.
Al -Beyrak, the Turkish firm that manages and maintains the port displayed the new tug port that they said will enhance the efficiency of the port operations.
Forty-two tons, 2007 model, is a smaller but powerful boat, that shepherd the bigger ship and guide them to the berth.
Maryam Aweys, minister for ports and sea, thanked the Turkish company for the new development saying modernisation of the facility is crucial for the growth of Somali economy.
“The upgrading of the Mogadishu port is significant for our country’s economic growth,” she said.
The director of Al-Beyrak who spoke during the media event said the tug would improve the operations of the port into a modern facility.
“The machine will help us anchor bigger vessels easily, act as a fire extinguisher and withstand other threats,” Samil Erol said.
He added that the company would continue to enhance the operations of Somalia’s central economic hub as agreed with the government.
Somali parliament awarded Al-Bayrak group to develop and manage the port of Mogadishu for 20 years on September 2014.
Under the agreement signed Al-Bayrak holding will receive 45 per cent of the revenue that it obtains from the port, which has great strategic significance in eastern Africa and gives the remaining 55 per cent to the Somalia government.
The port which was among facilities affected by the civil war for the past three decades now back operational 24 hours.
