Nairobi (Halbeeg) – Kenya’s Parliament Majority Leader Aden Duale has vowed to disclosed names of cartels behind importation contraband sugar in Kenya.
The government of Kenya has confiscated hundreds of tonnes of sugar which is unfit for human consumption in an operation led by the country’s interior ministry.
Speaking Saturday during the launch of Garissa High School alumni said he tabled before a parliamentary committee a list of the people involving in the illicit trade.
“Sugar tycoons, [whoever] they are, [whichever] regions they come from, will account for their business dealings before the parliamentary committee,” Mr. Duale said
The Garissa Township MP noted the list and names of over sixty importers and a person who bought 185 tons of poisonous sugar will be revealed on Tuesday.
“Report of people who imported sugar that is not fit for human consumption is with a committee of parliament and their names will be known on Tuesday,” Mr. Duale pledged.
The Garissa Township MP further delved into the lifestyle audit issue, saying he fully supports Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive that public officers undergo a lifestyle
“We are more than prepared for the lifestyle audit. We must know who owns what; we must clear this country of corruption. We must who are the importers of bad sugar, (those) selling drugs and (those) destroying forests,” he said.
Following emergence the reports of importation of sugar said to contain dangerous components like copper, Kenya launched thorough operations to hunt down individuals behind the importation of the sugar.
The operations nabbed high-rank officials including Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) officials.
