MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has to hold elections on timely without delay and extension, acting Somali security minister told president Farmajo.
Mohamed Abukar Islow Duale said the country cannot bear another anarchy and political crisis which plunge the country into another setback.
Speaking to attendees of Mudullood consultative meeting in Mogadishu, Islow urged President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to hold the election on time, says extension won’t happen.
“President Sheikh Sharif held the election on time, and so did President Hassan Sheikh. President Farmajo must follow that path,” said Minister Mohamed Abukar Islow.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term was extended from Sep 2016 to Feb 2017 to pave the way for elections.
Minister Islow is the acting security minister.
Last month, the leaders of the federal and state governments of Somalia agreed to form joint technical committee since federal Member State leaders had ruled out the possibility of one-man-one-vote elections to be held on time.
The leaders called for an alternative, inclusive model to be implemented before the government’s mandate expires.
The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) chairperson Halima Yarey told parliament in late June that the commission needed up to 13 months to prepare a credible poll where Somalis will cast their vote individually.
The term of the current parliament ends December 27th, while the president’s mandate expires on February 8, 2021.
