NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – A court in Mandera town near Kenya’s border with Somalia has allowed the law enforcement to detain a man suspected to be al-Shabaab suspect.
The police have arrested Abdi Hassan Yamah in operation conducted by officers of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).
According to the police, Yamah who has a Somali-origin has a Ugandan Identity card.
ATPU officer, Newton Mbogo filed an affidavit seeking to detain the suspect saying he is believed to be a spy for the terror group.
According to the ATPU, intelligence revealed that Mr. Yamah acquired the Ugandan ID fraudulently for purposes of concealing organised criminal activities.
He said detectives needed to establish circumstances under which the suspect was given the card.
“He is suspected to have been collecting information for al-Shabaab in Mandera,” Mr. Mbogo told Mandera Resident Magistrate Dancun Mtai in a sworn affidavit.
“The ATPU wants to carry out investigations in Kenya, Uganda, and Somalia to exonerate or charge the respondent.”
The officer said the motive of the man had not been established yet.
“He did not tell us where he was coming from. We suspect he is a spy (Amniyaat) who, on several occasions, conducted surveillance and gave information to al-Shabaab,” said Mr. Mbogo.
