MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least eight people have been killed and more than ten others were injured after a car bomb exploded on Monday in Wajir district in Mogadishu.
According to witnesses, the blast occurred near a busy junction in Wadajir district causing destruction on the premises.
“A parked car laden with explosives exploded in front of shops, several people including shopkeepers were killed in the blast,” said a witness who declined to be quoted.
Major Mohamed Hussein, a police officer, told Reuters that a parked car laden with explosives exploded in front of shops.
“Death toll may rise because there are many shops there,” Hussein said.
No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the latest attack in the Somali capital.
The attack comes hours after Al-Shabaab attack in central Somalia claimed lives of over fifteen people including a controversial cleric and his wife.
Heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters on Monday morning stormed the compound of Sufi cleric Sheikh Abdiweli Ali Elmi in the town of Galkayo, killing the cleric and some of his congregation.
Al-Shabab took the responsibility for the attack and put the number of dead at 26.
According to Reuters, the group said some soldiers who responded to the first attack also died as they tried to remove a second car bomb.
“We killed 26 people including the owner of the centre, his followers, his bodyguards and soldiers,” Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operation spokesman said.
