Somali Ministers eyeing to contest for the speakership of the Lower House should resign from their portfolios, the oversight committee said on Sunday.
Defense and energy& Water Ministers, Mohamed Mursal and Salim Aliow Ibrow respectively are among handful candidates vying for the office of the speaker of the House.
Abdullahi Mohamed Adan, a member of the newly formed Speaker’s election oversight committee said the body would not register ministers contesting for the speakership position while in office.
“Those Ministers vying for the office of the speaker should quit the office before contesting. They have to submit their resignation letters to Prime Minister, Kheire and give us a copy of their resignation letters before we allow them to take part in the election, Failure to do so, We will not admit their letters of candidacy,” said Adan.
The Lower House members on Saturday approved the names of a 15 member committee-all MPs who will preside over the election of a new speaker.
The committee is expected to hold the election of the speakership soon following the resignation of former office holder Mohamed Jawari early this month.
So far over four candidates including former parliament speaker have shown their interests in the position which was vacated by Jawari.
