MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – More than 40 Somali citizens have returned back to their country via Mogadishu on Saturday.
According to UNHCR which facilitated the journey the refugees voluntarily returned to their country from the Kenyan refugee camp of Dadaab as part of a half-million citizens based in the East African country.
The UNHCR voluntary repatriation program was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The refugees fled the violence in Somalia that broke out in the early 1990s.
“After months of suspension due to COVID19, the first group of Somali returnees has arrived in Mogadishu today from Kenya through the voluntary repatriation program. 42 individuals were received by UNHCR.”
“To ensure the safety of the returnees, we have put measures in place such as COVID testing and isolation before departure. We have also followed guidelines laid out by WHO and the governments of Somalia and Kenya.”
The Federal Government of Somalia, Kenya, and UNHCR signed a Tripartite Agreement in November 2013 for the voluntary repatriation of Somali refugees.
