MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – At least 40 al-Shabaab fighters have been killed in two bases manned by the group, Somali Spy agency said on Tuesday.
In a TwittTwitter, Somali National Intelligence Service Agency (NISA) said Somali forces launched offensives against al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle region.
According to the agency, the attack took place in Farsoley village.
βIn a covert operation, the security forces attacked places in Forsoley village where they seized weapons. The forces destroyed two locations which al-Shabaab has been using to extort taxes (from the locals). During the operation, 40 al-Shabaab fighters were killed,β the agency said.
The development comes on the heel of a car bomb in Mogadishu which claimed lives of over ten people yesterday.
The explosion took place at a shopping mall near Mogadishu local government headquarters.
The al-Qaeda linked group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Monday.
Somali National Armed Forces, backed by African Union Mission in Somalia(AMISOM), ousted al-Shabab from Mogadishu in August 2011, but the militants are still in control of some areas in south-central Somalia and capable of conducting terror acts.
