MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least 40 al-Shabaab fighters Lower Shabelle Security operations conducted by Somali forces in cooperation with international partners.
According to a statement by Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), the forces of the agency backed by international partners raided the al-Shabaab base near Nungare in the Afgoy district, Lower Shabelle region.
Among those killed are reportedly ten foreign fighters. NISA said the operation focused on clearing Al-Shabaab camps in the area.
The operation comes on the heels of another operation that killed 67 al-Shabaab fighters and seized large amounts of explosives. The operation took place in Ali-Qabobe village in the north-central Mudug region.
“The operation in the Harardhere district of central Mudug region took place at around 1 a.m. when 120 jerrycans containing improvised explosive devices were offloaded from a boat and carried in a vehicle that was guided by 69 militants. Bihi said Somalia’s National Army fired rocket-propelled grenades at the vehicle and destroyed it. He said only two militants were captured alive,” Brigadier General Mohamed Tahlil Bihi said.
Mid this week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud vowed that al-Shaabab would be eliminated by the end of the year.
Mohamud said the second phase of the operation would soon begin in Somalia’s South West State and the Jubaland region.
