MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces backed by Clan militias have today afternoon recaptured an al-Shabaab stronghold in the Middle Shabelle region as the government intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central regions.
According to military sources, the town was seized without resistance from al-Shabaab fighters who had been controlling the town for close to a decade.
Adan Yabaal town which lies about 245km away Somali capital, Mogadishu was under al-Shabaab control since 2016.
In the hours of Monday, the forces Warta-dibi and Bos-Adur villages along the route leading to Adan Yabaal town.
The forces killed several al-Shabaab fighters and recovered weapons from the group.
The development comes as Somali military and local militias have intensified operations to liberate villages and towns under al-Shabaab fighters in south-central Somalia.
Despite losing many towns to the government forces, the group still wages deadly attacks on military bases, security checkpoints and hotels.
Last week, al-Shabaab killed 8 people and several others in a deadly hotel siege in Mogadishu. The hotel siege took more than 18 hours before the government forces ended it by killing four attackers.
