MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali National Army (SNA) said on Thursday that its forces foiled an attack and inflicted heavy casualties on al-Shabaab fighters who attempted to storm a military base in Hurweyn village which lies about 25km away from Nur-Dugle town of Middle Shabelle region.
According to military sources, the attack started with Improvised Explosive Device (IED), before al-Shabaab fighters storming the base from different direction, prompting fierce fighting with Somali military.
“The Somali National Army has repelled an attack by al-Shabaab on a military base in Hurweyn village,” SNA officials.
Al-Shabaab group which has been fighting to overthrow the government claimed responsibility for the latest attack on SNA base.
Somali forces backed by local militias have recently intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south and central Somalia.
