MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali elite forces have killed at least 20 al-Shabaab fighters following fierce clashes with the group in Qorfo village of Somalia’s central region, Hiiraan.
In a statement, the Somali military said Somali commandos attacked the village which was under the control of al-Shabaab.
“Somali commandos have conducted a well-planned operation against al-Shabaab fighters in Qorfo. Somali forces killed 20 fighters,” the military statement reads in part.
The development comes hours after the Hiiraan region governor gave $10,000 to a soldier who killed two al-Shabaab in the region.
Somali forces in collaboration with local militias have launched security operations against al-Shabaab fighters in Galgaduud and Hiiraan regions.
The allied forces have already liberated dozens of villages and towns in the Hiraan region.
According to the Somali information ministry, hundreds of fighters were killed in the ongoing operation in Lower and Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan and Galgaduud.
