Mandera (Halbeeg News) – At least one soldier was killed, and two others wounded in series of attacks conducted by al-Shabaab fighters in areas near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters on Monday morning targeted vehicles on a route in Konton and burnt the vehicles and motorcycles. According to the police statement, there were no injuries.
At about 3 pm another group launched a motor on the Korof Harar police station which blew up part of the facilities there injuring police who were present.
Northeastern police boss George Seda said the group targeted a communication mast that is within the station. Security was mobilized to repulse the gang that is on the rampage.
Another group of terrorists set up an IED on the Mandera-Rhamu Road in Qumbiso but residents alerted the police.
Police fear the terrorists are planning a bigger attack in the area and have called for heightened vigilance.
Al-Shabaab has been attacking areas along Kenya’s border with Somalia since 2011 when Kenya sent its troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabaab fighters.
Dozens of non-locals were killed and wounded in the attacks in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties.
There are thousands of Kenyan soldiers working under African Union Mission in Somalia.
