MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s elite forces have foiled al-Shabaab attack on a military base in south of Somali capital amid SNA intensified operations against al-Shabaab.
Speaking to the media, Special Gorgor Unit commander Mohamed Sheikh said the forces killed 29 al-Shabaab combatants following an hour long fighting with Al-Shabaab.
The fighting broke out after al-Shabaab gunmen stormed Gorgor military base in Barire, a town about 60 km south of Mogadishu.
“We killed 29 al-Shabab fighters here in Barire today after they attempted to attack us at our base,” the commander said. “We thwarted the attack and pushed them back with heavy casualties.”
Sheikh confirmed that one soldier was killed and three others sustained injuries during the fighting.
The attack comes two day after Somali special forces, Danab calimed to have killed 60-Shabaab fighters including their senior leader during operations conducted in several locations in the central part of the country.
Hassan Mohamed Osman, commander of 7th Danab Commandos who led the operation, told Somalia National Army (SNA) Radio that the forces also destroyed al-Shabab hideouts near Goobaalle village in Middle Shabelle region.
“Danab Commandos today killed the al-Shabab terrorist leader in charge of insurgents in Hiiraan region and 60 al-Shabab terrorists,” Osman said.
