MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Long-serving senior al-Shabaab judge has turned himself in to the authorities in Qoryooley town of Lower Shabelle region, Somali national army (SNA) has confirmed.
Military officials who spoke to the state-owned media have said the head of al-Shabaab court in Kuntuwarey town has defected from the group on Friday.
According to Somali national Television (SNTV), the identified as Mohamed Hassan Moalim aka Abu Ali has been a member of the group.
“Mohamed Hassan Moalim has defected from Al-Shabaab and now is in the hands of the government forces in Qoryooley town. He contacted military officials who facilitated his surrender,” the military officials told SNTV.
Officials who facilitated his defection said he renounced the group’s ideology.
Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the surrender of the senior al-Shabaab.
Somali government forces have been carrying out operations against al-Shabaab fighters in central and southern Somalia.
With the support of troops of the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom), the Somali military succeeded to take control of many towns including Mogadishu.
