GOOF-GADUUD (Halbeeg News)-At least five people were killed and more than 40 others were wounded after an inland explosive device went off in Goof-Gaduud, 30 kilometres west of Baidoa, the interim capital of the southwest state of Somalia.
The blast occurred at a busy market on Wednesday as livestock traders gathered for the weekly transaction.
The injured were rushed to nearby health centres in Baidoa for further treatment.
According to southwest state administration spokesman, Nuradin Yusuf armed group al-Shabaab was responsible for the attack.
“The al-Shabaab planted explosives in the busy market, several people were harmed,” he said.
This latest attack comes weeks after the newly elected southwest regional leader, Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Lafta Gareen vowed to improve the security of the region.
The armed group which is fighting to topple internationally backed government still controls some areas mainly in the south.
