NAIROBI (Halbeeg News)-A court in North Eastern Kenya has finally freed a New Zealander with Somali origin held in police custody for several days after suspicion of links with armed group al-Shabaab.
Sulub Warfaa, 36, spoke to journalists outside the court in Garissa, North Eastern Kenya shortly after his release saying he has nothing to do with the group.
“Just because I was born in Mogadishu does not mean that I am a terrorist,” he said.
Warfa added that the officers were doing their work and his happy now that he got his freedom back.
“I’m really happy that I am free, you know, and actually finally justice has been served, ” he said.
He was arrested near Kenya’s border with Somalia for allegedly possessing two passports with different names.
Warfa was detained with 10 other people in a sweep on suspected al-Shabaab near the Dadaab refugee camp, which houses many Somali refugees.
The crackdown followed an attack in January on a hotel complex in Nairobi in which 21 people were killed and many others wounded. The Thai owned DusitD2 hotel attack was claimed by al-Shabab.
The group which is also fighting to topple Somali government is carrying out attacks inside Kenya in retaliation for the presence of Kenyan troops in southern Somalia.
