DOHA ( Halbeeg News)-The federal republic of Somalia and state of Qatar have signed an agreement to cooperate on the defense sector.
The Somali defense minister, Hassan Ali Mohamed who returned from an official visit to Doha has confirmed the two countries agreed to enhance their military and defense cooperation.
“We agreed with our Qatari counterparts to strengthen our military and defense-related cooperations,” the minister said. “They pledged to help us in rebuilding and equipping our armed forces.”
The minister had conducted various side-line meetings during his stay in Qatar.
He met with senior Qatar defense officials after his meeting with Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Athani.
Last week, Qatar donated more than 68 armored vehicles to Somali military in its effort to help Mogadishu counter al- Shabaab attacks.
Doha became interested in Somalia following Mogadishu’s neutral stand on the blockade imposed by fellow Gulf states and Egypt a year ago.
