MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) -Thousands of Somali protesters have taken to the streets of Mogadishu in support of Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo who is facing impeachment motion.
The demonstrations organised by the civil society members which took place in different parts of the city were meant to oppose the recently filed motion to impeach the president.
The protestors paralysed traffic along Maka Al Mukarama, and Sodonka road before making their way into Daljirka Dahsoon (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) were demanding the MPs to drop the impeachment against Farmaajo.
Over 90 lawmakers have reportedly signed the motion of no confidence against the president on Sunday afternoon.
In a five-point argument, the motion accused President Farmaajo of grossly violating the provisional constitution of Somalia.
The lawmakers noted several concerns including the extradition of the former Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) Commander, Abdikarim Muse Qalbi-Dhagah to the Ethiopian government.
According to the proposition, the president was also accused of signing a secret agreement with Ethiopian Prime minister Abiy Ahmed.
The Lawmaker are questioning the announcement in June during Abiy’s visit to Mogadishu in which both leaders had agreed to Ethiopia developing four Somali ports.
The move to impeach the president was opposed by the First and Second Deputy Speakers of the Somali Parliament Abdiweli Muudey and Mahad Awad respectively.
Both deputy speakers of the parliament have warned against the impeachment motion against president Farmajo saying the absence of a constitutional court could put a legal obstacle to carrying out impeachment proceedings.
In a statement read out, Mahad Awad said that they notified the Speaker of existing rules that bar parliamentary leaders from processing a political impeachment against an MP or the President.
