MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – International partners have called upon the federal government of Somalia to rump up its effort to combat corruption that ravaged the Horn of the African nation.
Speaking at International Anti-Corruption Day event held in Mogadishu on Sunday, United States ambassador to Somalia, Donald Yamamoto said his country is in the process of increasing assistance levels inform of debt relief to Somalia that will only come into progress, should the government intensify the fight against corruption at the maximum level.
“The United States is on a path of expanding assistance levels, and we will work into heavy debt relief for Somalis,” said Yamamoto.
However, Yamamoto acknowledged that there was some progress made in the right direction to the fight against corruption by Somali leaders.
“Some good things are going on in the right direction, and that takes leadership,”
On his part, Somali minister for justice Hassan Hussein Haji said the federal government would not make any real development, should the war on corruption failed implemented seriously.
“Fighting corruption is one of the priorities of the government, security, social and economic development cannot be achieved without [getting] corruption free country,” the minister stated.
The country’s Attorney General, Ahmed Ali Dahir who spoke at the event has urged the government to come up with strategies that can help the fight against corruption and build the trust of the international community and development partners.
“We have to build the level of trust the international have on Somalia that has linked with our independence. if you cannot manage the aid and assistance entrusted with you due to a high level of corruption, a more corrupt agency will be appointed to deliver it to you.”
Mr. Dahir said the government has made progress in the fight against corruption for the past few months as individuals accused of bribery and money embezzlement, were arrested and prosecuted.
This event celebration follows days after the upper house of federal parliament approved the establishment of the independent anti-corruption agency in the country.
