MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Mursal Abdirahman has reinstated the parliamentary oversight committee on budget and finance less than two weeks after they were disbanded.
In a statement on Saturday, the speaker of Lower House, Mr. Mursal has reversed a recent decision by his deputy Abdiweli Ibrahim Muudey to disband the committee.
“The Budget Committee should continue with its normal work and quickly complete the review of the 2017 budget and the 2019 budget before the end of 2018,” Mursal said.
The speaker called for respect of the independence of the federal parliament.
According to the statement, Mr. Mursal urged the executive to accept the work of house oversight committees.
“The government should let the committee work without interference in their oversight and accountability roles of government institutions and should abide by the House Standing Orders and the laws of the country,” Mursal directed the government.
On 28th last month, the first deputy speaker of federal parliament of Somalia, Abdiweli Mudey dissolved the parliamentary committee just ten days after they released a report that alleged mismanagement of funds at the Ministry of Finance and Mogadishu regional administration.
In the report, the Committee said millions of dollars are unaccounted, and there is no proper documentation of expenses.
The Committee reported that $20 million which was part of $50 million budgetary support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2017 had not been accounted.
