MOGADISHU(Halbeeg News)- US military said its forces conducted airstrike against al Shabaab fighters in Southern Somalia.
In a statement released by U.S. Africa Command on Wednesday, the U.S forces conducted the strike with the support of the Federal Government of Somalia as it continues to degrade al Shabaab.
The U.S. forces conducted a self-defence airstrike targeting al-Shabaab militants in the vicinity of Awdheegle town in Lower Shabelle region.
The operation which took place on 4 December 2018 killed four al Shabaab fighters.
“The U.S. airstrike was conducted against militants after U.S. and partner forces came under attack. We currently assessed that this airstrike killed four (4) militants with no civilians’ casualties,” the statement reads in part.
The military vowed that they would continue the attacks against al Shabaab in Somalia.
“Alongside our Somali and international partners, we are committed to preventing al-Shabaab from taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia,” the statement stated. “In particular, the group uses portions of southern and central Somalia to plot and direct terror attacks, steal humanitarian aid, extort the local populace to fund its operations, and shelter radical terrorists.”
U.S. Africa Command said it would continue to work with its partners to transfer the responsibility for long-term security in Somalia from the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) to the Federal Government of Somalia and its Member States. The U.S. forces will use all effective and appropriate methods to protect the Somali people, including partnering with military counter-terror operations undertaken by the Federal Government of Somalia, AMISOM and Somali National Army forces.
