MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Somali Parliament has called for immediate ceasefire in Somalia’s northern region, Sool.
Over fifty fighters from both sides were killed and dozens injured in two-day clan clashes in Dhumay village.
In a separate session of the two Houses, the speakers of the Lower and Upper Houses, Mohamed Mursal Abdirahman, and Abdi Hashi Abdullahi have urged the sides to end the fighting which displayed hundreds of families from their homes.
The Senate speaker, Hashi has termed the clashes an unfortunate saying it unacceptable to see two brotherly clans shading their blood.
“I condole with their families of the victims of the clashes. It is unfortunate at this moment to witness fighting between two brotherly clans. I urge elders, politicians, intellectuals to take part ending the clashes,” Mr. Hashi said.
For his part, Abdirahman expressed concern over the renewed fighting in Sool region.
“We are calling upon the leaders from the region, elders, and intellectuals to convince to stop the fighting and engage in dialogue to resolve their differences,” Mr. Abdirahman urged.
Abdullahi Ali Hirsi, interior minister of Puntland told Reuters that 51 people died and 120 others were injured in the fighting.
The minister called on the sides to end the fighting.
“It is unfortunate that other clan militias equipped and paid by Somaliland have sided with the two fighting clans. We call for a ceasefire and urge the clan elders to stop the war and participate in a peace conference to be held by Puntland,” he said.
