MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali military soldiers have thwarted a major Al-Shabaab attack on their bases in Qoryooley town of Lower Shabelle region.
According to reports, the fighters launched an attack on the SNA base in the outskirts of the town on Sunday night, prompting a fierce fight between the sides.
Over six people from both sides were killed and seven others injured in the clashes which lasted for two hours.
Qoryooley local authorities confirmed the attack saying the government troops came under a surprise attack by Al-Shabaab fighters but the troops managed to repel the fighters.
“Al-Shabaab fighters have attacked SNA military, attempting to run over security checkpoints and bases manned by the forces, but this time the forces taught them a lesson,” Mohamed Abdi Gashan, Qoryooley deputy district commissioner said. ” The forces briefly retreated from their post but finally managed to repulse the attackers.”
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack saying the group’s fighters had killed over five government soldiers and had temporarily seized the town.
