ARTA (Halbeeg News) – Djibouti government has commended the government of Saudi Arabia for Djibouti and Eritrea.
On Thursday, the two countries agreed to normalise ties a decade after a border dispute led to brief military clashes.
Djibouti foreign minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has hailed Saudi Arabia for its commitment to end the disputed between the countries over the region of Doumeira.
He also praised efforts by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia in creating an environment conducive to peace in the Horn of Africa.
“The Government of Djibouti highly values the mediation currently being undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in resolving the crisis between Djibouti and Eritrea,” Mr. Youssouf, ” “And the peace efforts of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia have created an environment conducive to peace in the Horn of Africa.”
Djibouti on Thursday welcomed delegates led by Eritrean foreign minister who paid a surprise visit to Djibouti as part of a regional bid to soothe tensions between the neighbours.
The two small Horn of Africa nations have been at loggerheads for decades over the border dispute and clashes erupted in 2008.
Qatar brokered a peace deal in 2010 but relations have remained strained.
Djibouti in July this year petitioned the United Nation’s security council, asking the body to ‘facilitate an agreement between them upon a mutually acceptable means of peaceful dispute settlement.
