TRIPOLI (Halbeeg News) – Somali origin inmates in medium-security prisons in Tripoli, the capital city of Libya were at large after unidentified gunmen opened fire on the facility, Somali embassy said on Tuesday.
The attack happened early hours of Monday at the jails following heavy fighting between the prison guards and the attackers.
Guards were overpowered and inmates were able to escape.
Somali ambassador to Belgium, Netherlands, Benelux and EU, Ali Said Fiqi said several Somalis who were in those prison escape after the attack.
The ambassador confirmed some of the escapees arrived at the embassy hours after the attack.
“We have confirmation that several jails in Tripoli were attacked. We are informing all the Somali parents whose children arrested in Tripoli jails escape. Some of them have already arrived at the embassy,” Mr. Fiqi.
He also noted that several others were at large.
Mr. Fiqi did not say what would be the fate of the escapees who reached the embassy.
