ADDIS-ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Ethiopian Court has issued an arrest warrant against country’s former intelligence chief, Getachew Assefa on charges of crimes against humanity committed in Ethiopia.
According to Ethiopia based Esat media, Mr. Getachew who was reportedly fled the country was accused of committing of serious human rights violations.
The Ethiopian Spy agency was accused of ‘systemic torture, the brutal and relentless pattern of abuse, torture, rape, and humiliation under the leadership of Mr. Getachew.
Sources told Esat that Mr. Getachew is wanted for a range of several serious crimes.
Reports say the former chief spy who was hiding in his hometown sneaked into Sudan with help of the law enforcement in his Tigrean region.
“ESAT’s source also said police for the Tigray region, his home base, has helped the former head of the National Intelligence and Security Services to cross into Sudan. He has earlier sent his family abroad,” ESAT reports.
Mr. Getachew who had been serving as the country’s head of intelligence for many years under the rule of Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was sacked this year after Prime minister Abiy Ahmed assumed office in April.
