Jowhar(Halbeeg News) Senior commanders of Al-shabab fighters were captured in a massive security operations conducted in middle Shabelle region, officials confirm.
Mohamed Mohamud Moalim, the commander of 27th division of Somali National Army told the media that the forces have arrested nine members of Al-shabab among them two commanders.
The two commanders nabbed during the security operations conducted by the government forces were identified as Omar Qadim Herow, finance commander of Al-shabab and Mohamed Bashir, Amniyat leader in the region.
Moalim stressed that the purpose of the operations is to eradicate Al-Qaeda linked Al-shabab fighters and deter the treats in the region.
“These operations were aimed to beef up the security, we have captured commanders and fighters of Al-shabab group during the crackdown. The operations will continue until the security of the region is tightened” said Koronto.
On the other hand, the commander confirmed that the forces have advanced to new areas that were safe haven to Al-shabab fighters in Middle Shabelle region.
He added that forces will dismantle the networks of the group that plan the ambush attacks and assassinations against government forces and peace-keeping troops that ply along the main road linking the major towns in the region.
Al-shabab has carried out attacks on the road linking Mogadishu and Jowhar targeting civilians, government officials, Somali National army and AMISOM troops.
June this year, two lawmakers of Hirshabelle regional assembly and seven other people were killed after heavily armed Al-shabab militants carried out ambush attack on a military escorting a convoy at Elka-Gelow vicinity on the main road linking Jowhar and Mogadishu.
