Somali National Army backed African Union in Somalia have destroyed Al-Shabab bases in Hiraan region, government officials confirmed Tuesday.
Hiiraan governor, Ali Jeyte Osman who spoke to the media said Somali forces raided villages manned by Al-shabab and managed to destroy bases and hideouts of the group in the region.
“We have been carrying out operations against Al-shabaab since last week. Somali forces supported by AMISOM troops have raided several villages including Bardhere, Yabalyale and Afar-irdod villages,” said Jeyte.
The governor noted the forces seized cache of weapons during the operations and killed over seven fighters.
The weapons seized from Al-shabab fighters during the operations were displayed at Hees village near Mahas town.
“During the operations our forces killed eight fighters and seized huge cache of weapons, one vehicle, medicine supply, receipts and note-books ” he confirmed.
Jayte said the forces will go on with the operations in the region to flush out Al-shabab fighters.
“We will not relent until we kick out Al-shabab from the region,” he vowed.
“Most of Al-shabab fighters fled the region following the intensive operations by the joint forces” Jeyte highlighted.
SNA and AMISOM forces launched security operations aimed at opening the main road linking Beledweyne and Bula-burde district that was blocked by Al-shabab.
