Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s national army (SNA) said its forces gave chase to an al-Shabaab senior leader during security operation in central Somalia region.
In a statement, Somali Defense Ministry said the armed forces hunted the leader a village near Galcad town of Galgaduud region.
The ministry identified the leader as Mahad Agadub who was head of finance department in the region.
“Al-Shabaab’s head of extortion in Galgaduud region, Mahad Agadub, dies of cardiac arrest while fleeing government forces,” the statement reads in part.
The forces also arrested two of his bodyguards during the operation.
The operation against Agadub comes as Somali government is planning to carry out second phase of operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central Somalia.
Last July, Somalia launched operations against al-Shabaab fighters in Hiiraan, Galgadud, Middle Shabelle and Mudug regions.
The government forces backed by local clan militias recaptured dozens of villages and towns in central Somalia.
