MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – A senior al-Shabab commander who defected to Somali government has arrived in Mogadishu, Somali spy agency confirmed.
According to Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency, the man who has been fighting alongside al-Shabaab for a long time has managed to desert the group with the help of the agency.
Mukhtar Mohamed Abdi aka Mukhtar-Ganey arrived in Mogadishu on Saturday.
In a Twitter post, the agency said acting on his request, it facilitated Muktar’s plan to desert the group.
“Mukhtar Mohamed Abdi, who was an al-Shabaab official for a long time has just arrived in Mogadishu after he requests NISA help him means to defect from the group,” reads the post with a mugshot of the Mukhtar.
The agency did not give out further information about the defector.
There was no immediate comment from al-Shabaab on the latest defection from its group.
Somali forces backed by the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) have intensified the operations on al-Shabab in central and southern Somalia to flush the fighters out of those regions.
