MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Somali government has condoled with Egypt following the deaths of more than 10 people in a train tragedy.
Four train wagons on Sunday ran off the railway track by the city of Banha in Qalyubia province, just outside Cairo.
Videos on social media showed wagons overturned and passengers escaping to safety along the railway.
The train was travelling to the Nile delta city of Mansoura from the Egyptian capital.
In a statement to newsrooms, Somali Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Monday extended its condolences to Egyptian government and the families of people who perished in the train.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia expresses its heartfelt condolences to the Government and the friendly people of Egypt following the passenger train accident,” the statement reads in part.
Sunday’s train accident came three weeks after two passenger trains collided in the province of Sohag, killing at least 18 people and injuring 200 others, including children.
Train wrecks and mishaps are common in Egypt, where the railway system has a history of badly maintained equipment and mismanagement.
